054 – Meadowfolk

Not every tribe on Posterra seeks to expand, dominate, subjugate or to battle for the very right to exist. Sure, in these harsh times and harsher lands the way of the sword is most often the common law, but there are some kin that found a way to avoid the brutish conflicts, either by hiding in the worlds deepest bowels, offering an unique service that everyone desire or simply be magically protected from nearly all harm. Such is the case with the merry and eclectic Meadowfolk – an umbrella term for all the sprites, fairies and gnomes of the grand green, the fields, the meadows, the hills and picturesque forest. On first glance they would make ideal prey – bumbling, silly, often obnoxious and not really build for any sort of combat. And yet, two things protect them with astonishing success rate. First, is their magic nature – they can pop in and out of existence at whim, it seems, not just turning invisible or teleporting, but just… dissipating into the aura of the place to reform again at will within their domain. That already make hunting them a tedious and frustrating prospect. But then, you will know the second deterrent – even if you will manage to catch and kill one, the nature around will crumble a solid bit. The grasses will wilt, the tree would dry to a husk, the soil will blacken. While it might seem like not a big deal to a starving opportunist, in general most species agreed to not hunt the meadowfolk, for the precious few spots of fertile, food giving life are just too crucial to any tribe living alongside it to allow for it’s piecemeal withering.
